Retail sales fell in January

Retail sales fell by 2.9 per cent year-on-year in January, indicate preliminary data published by Statistics Finland on Thursday. Disregarding the impact of prices, the volume of retail sales decreased by 2.1 per cent. In January, the sales of daily consumer goods fell by 2.0 per cent and the volume of the sales by 1.5 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period last year.

Net sales fell faster than the volume of sales in retail and daily consumer goods trade as prices in both sectors dropped in comparison to last year's January.

Published by Statistics Finland on Thursday, the so-called retail trade flash estimate is based on a sample covering an average of 60 per cent of turnover of the retail sector.
