Timo Soini holds the reins of a male-dominated party as the chairperson of the Finns Party: The vast majority of the Finns Party Parliamentary Group are men. The majority of Finns Party councillors are men. Men also make up 65 per cent of candidates running on the ticket of the opposition party in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The supporter base of the party, in turn, consists largely of skilled workers and small business owners.

The lack of female candidates is a problem the party may have realised too late. “Women present us with a great opportunity to grow. We must improve in that respect,” acknowledges Soini. The Finns Party is, however, opposed to gender quotas.
